My childhood Christmases were filled with the magic of Advent. As a Lutheran, this season was deeply rooted in our church tradition. One of my favorite memories is doing an advent calendar leading up to Christmas. Every evening, I’d eagerly open a new window to reveal a small treat or surprise. And let’s be honest, what child doesn’t love getting a daily dose of candy? The thrill of discovery and the anticipation of what the next day would bring made Advent a truly special time for me.

We’re huge fans of DIY projects here at Red Ted Art, and the Christmas season is no exception. There’s nothing quite like creating personalized and homemade gifts for loved ones. When it comes to kids’ advent calendars, we’ve received our fair share of simple chocolate calendars from relatives in the past. But as our little ones have grown older and busier with school, I’ve found myself seeking out more creative alternatives.

In the past, we enjoyed activity-based calendars that incorporated various tasks like crafting, baking, and storytelling – a perfect fit for DIY advent calendars. When Photobox challenged me to come up with a photo-based project, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, especially after discovering their amazing retro prints. That’s when the idea for a Photo Advent calendar was born.

Creating an advent calendar from scratch can be a fun and rewarding experience. For many of us, childhood memories are closely tied to opening up our daily surprises during the holiday season. One such beloved tradition is the chocolate-filled plastic mold that requires us to rip open the cardboard square to reveal our sweet treats.

DIY Reusable Advent Calendar

I’m sure many of us have experienced the joy of opening a Lego Advent Calendar with our kids, but as they grow older, their interest in the small toys and sets may start to wane. That’s exactly what happened with my boys – after several years, they lost enthusiasm for the calendar. I found myself wishing there were more options or that I could customize it myself with gifts tailored to each child’s interests.

It was then that I had an epiphany: why not reuse the inside of a Lego Advent Calendar and turn it into something truly personalized? And so, I set out to create my own DIY Reusable Advent Calendar. In this post, I’ll show you how easily I transformed the original calendar, making it a unique and special experience for my children.

When browsing through the Christmas ornament selection at your local craft store, you may have noticed the array of chalkboard ornaments available. Inspired by my previous project, the Christmas Countdown Sandwich Board, I thought a countdown ornament would be an excellent idea as well. However, I wanted to avoid traditional round shapes since they can be challenging to write on and read. Instead, I opted for a ‘squished’ design, which was already painted black with chalkboard paint.

Alternatively, you could easily paint a clear ornament or any other surface that is suitable for writing. Regardless of the approach, it will undoubtedly be an enjoyable experience for children to update the number each day.
