What country has the heaviest drinkers?

It is difficult to definitively answer what country has the heaviest drinkers, as alcohol consumption data is variable and estimates of people’s drinking habits vary widely. Generally, European countries tend to have the highest rates of alcohol consumption in terms of per capita consumption.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the countries that rank at the top for alcohol consumption in Europe include Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Romania.

Although the WHO’s report cannot be used to definitively identify which country has the heaviest drinkers, some other studies suggest that countries in Northern, Central, and Eastern Europe may have higher alcohol consumption than other countries.

For instance, a 2017 study found that Lithuania, Austria, Germany, and France have the highest consumption of alcohol in the world, based on consumption per capita.

Outside of Europe, countries such as New Zealand, Australia, Canada and Argentina have also been identified as having high rates of alcohol consumption. Notably, some countries may not appear on lists of countries with the highest alcohol consumption based on per capita measures, yet still have large amounts of alcohol consumption due the sheer size of their population; examples include India and China.
