After Jon Snow, Sansa, and several Wildlings left the castles of Winterfell, Ramsay and his army had a tremendous advantage in finding them because they had the castle guards helping them scout out the area.
First, Ramsay set his own horsemen out to seek out the fleeing group. They eventually found Rickon, who was naive and unguarded. They chased him while shooting arrows and finally surrounded him, leaving him no way to escape.

This meant that the tenants were unable to be paid and this in turn caused them to distrust the House of Stark and convinced them to join forces with Littlefinger.
Where did Osha take Rickon?

He was willing to negotiate the safety of Rickon, but Ramsay throws the head of Rickon’s direwolf, Shaggydog, at Sansa’s feet. Knowing the danger, Sansa immediately shouts for Rickon to run. Despite Jon warning Rickon not to go straight, he runs in a dead straight line and is subsequently shot in the back with an arrow and killed by Ramsay.
Rickon’s body is later found by Jon, Sansa and Davos in their successful campaign to retake Winterfell from the Boltons.
