Tengen had a great respect for and passion for Demon Slaying and worked hard to protect the innocent and defeat evil. He was also well-versed in hand-to-hand combat thanks to his former martial arts training and had a good understanding of how to properly use a sword.
His sword technique was described as that of a master, and his skillful swordplay helped him gain a reputation as a formidable opponent.
Tengen was also a man of deep empathy and understanding. This quality of his made him loved among fellow Demon Slayers and even demons, earning him the nickname “The God of Mercy”. He understood the motivations of his enemies as well as his allies and used this insight to help build a bridge of understanding between them.
Therefore, due to his many qualities and accomplishments, Tengen was chosen to become a Hashira and stood guard over the Demon Slayers’ Corps as a pillar of strength, bearing witness to its many accomplishments.
Sadly, he was ultimately betrayed and killed by his trusted companion, Muzan Kibutsuji, who stabbed him from behind with a poisoned dagger.

Kamado Tanjirou, a young boy from the distant mountains of Japan, retired from being a Hashira, or a pillar of the Demon Slaying Corps. Tanjirou had been fighting to rid the world of demons since his beloved sister was killed by one.
After many battles that he fought, ultimately the young swordsman succumbed to his overwhelming inner demons and retired from his mission, despite being a part of the prestigious corps. Tanjirou’s determination, however, didn’t waver and he accepted his new role as an informant on the demon world.
He focused on living his life and occasionally used his skills as a former Hashira to contribute to the fight against the demon threat. Tanjirou remains a symbol of courage and perseverance in a world filled with unimaginable evil.
Who all has Hashira died?
So far, in the popular manga and anime series Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, four of the Hashira (Pillar) have died. They are Haboku Kamado, Gyomei Himejima, Sanemi Shinazugawa, and Obanai Iguro.
Haboku Kamado was the first Hashira to die in the series. He was killed by the Upper Rank 1 Demon Rui. Haboku, having lost both his arms from a previous confrontation with Rui, was unable to defend himself against the Demon’s onslaught, and was ultimately defeated.
Gyomei Himejima is the second Hashira to die in the series. He is killed by Muzan Kibutsuji, the leader of the Demons. Gyomei, despite putting up a valiant fight, is eventually overwhelmed and killed by Muzan’s overwhelming power.
Sanemi Shinazugawa, who was the plushest Hashira and one of the main villains of the series, was the third to die. He perished in a battle against Upper Rank 3 Demon Akaza. Sanemi had planned to use his Wind Pillar techniques to leave a lasting legacy, but had underestimated the speed and strength of Akaza.
In the end, he was slain by Akaza’s lightning-fast blows.
Lastly, Obanai Iguro, who was the strongest and most loyal Hashira of the group, was killed in the final battle against Muzan Kibutsuji. Obanai put up a fierce battle against Muzan, using all of his Kagura Technique.
He eventually succumbed to Muzan’s overwhelming power and sacrificed himself in order to prevent Muzan from destroying the other Demon Slayers.
Unfortunately, these four were the only Hashira who died in the series, although fans of the series were left devastated by the deaths.
